'RuPaul's Drag Race': Dax ExclamationPoint & Laila McQueen

In week two of "RuPaul's Drag Race" the mini-challenge was a Latin-style dance-off with outfits donated by AHF's Out of the Closet. The two winners were Cynthia and Chi Chi, who were then the captains of the maxi-challenge, which was an all-dancing, all-lip syncing dragapella movie: "B-tch Perfect."

Although they competed as teams, they were judged individually and the bottom two queens were Dax ExclamationPoint and Laila McQueen. After they lip synced for their lives, the queen sashaying away was.... both of them! Afterwards, Ru asked for Michelle's phone and called someone to come back... who is it? We will have to wait until next week to find out!

At what age did drag become an interest and how did you pick your name?

Dax - I started doing drag at 18. I got into drag as part of the "Rocky Horror Picture Show" performances. That show is still going on, but I am not a part of it. My drag name is Dax because it's my real first name and when I sign my name I always put an exclamation point at the end so I decided my drag surname would just be that, spelled out.

Laila - I started doing drag when I was 15 or 16, as I would go to house parties in drag. I worked at a strip club and I had a lot of stripper friends and they helped pick the name Laila, and McQueen is from the designer Alexander McQueen. It's kind of a joke since he is an iconic fashion designer and I am not necessarily known for wearing the most fashionable clothes.

How many times did you apply to be on RPDR and how did it feel when you found out you were chosen?

Dax - I applied five times, starting with season two....and I kept applying except I skipped one year. I wasn't going to apply this year, but Violet told me to do it again, and I listened to her and got picked. I honestly didn't believe it when I got the call, it was almost like a dream.

Laila - I auditioned three times until I got chosen. I actually thought I was being pranked when I got the phone call. They producers were super casual about it so I thought they were joking with me.

Is there an additional pressure now that "RuPaul" is in its eighth season and has aired 100 shows?

Dax - Defintiely, there's lots of pressure because there are so many of us now. And people are scrutinizing us more. I try my best, but you can't please everyone all the time.

Laila - Of course. There is always pressure to not do what another queen has done. In addition, as the seasons continue the challenges get harder, stepping it up from previous seasons.

Were you shocked about the double elimination?

Dax - We were both taken aback, as it was completely off the cuff. We were both completely crushed and shocked over it. It was good having someone to go through it with though.

Laila - We were totally shocked as it was only the second episode of the season and only the second time in drag race history that two girls were eliminated at the same time.

Tell me about your "RuPaul's Drag Race" experience.

Dax - It was weird. They lock you in a hotel room, and you only get to go out to exercise or go to the set. It's very stressful and strange.

Laila - It was insane. I come from a small town and I have never done anything as crazy or as big of a production as this was. It is very overwhelming, but in the best way possible. The opportunity to be there is so amazing because it is so exclusive.

Who do you want to win?

Dax - I'm definitely a huge supporter of any of the New York girls. At this point I don't have one favorite as it could be anybody.

Laila - I really like the New York girls, so I am rooting for Bob, Acid or Thorgy.

Tell me something people would be surprised to know about you.

Dax - They pretty much know everything already. I am an open book.

Laila - I am not that much different out of drag, just a little more ugly. I am not a very mysterious person; what you see is what you get.

What's ahead for Dax/Laila?

Dax - Anything and everything. I am open to it all, and I really looking forward to traveling, music, art, comic con... all the fun stuff.

Laila - Anything and everything I can possibly do. I am trying not to limit myself. My first goal is to move out of my parents' basement, and do a lot of art and performances. I paint and illustrate things, and my website for that is TylerDevlin.com.
