Arrest made – but ‘Hank’ the Frenchie remains missing, SFPD says

A tan French Bulldog named “Hank” is still missing after San Francisco police announced December 18 that an arrest had been made in the alleged theft.

The pooch was reported missing December 10 when police responded to the 400 block of Castro Street, according to a news release the San Francisco Police Department issued last week.

On Thursday afternoon, SFPD Public Information Officer Robert Rueca announced that Dante Shaw, 44, of Oakland, had been arrested and booked on one count of grand theft.

“The lead investigator developed probable cause to obtain a search warrant for Shaw’s vehicle,” Rueca stated, adding that on December 17, “SFPD officers located Shaw in his vehicle at San Carlos Avenue and High Street [in Oakland] where he was detained. Officers and the investigator served the search warrant on the vehicle, which resulted in the seizure of evidence related to the theft. The investigator developed probable cause to arrest Shaw for the theft.”

SFPD provided information earlier about the alleged incident.

“Officers arrived on scene and met with the victim who stated that an unknown male picked up his dog named ‘Hank’ off the sidewalk and fled the scene,” Rueca stated at the time. “Hank is a 4-year-old French Bulldog, tan in color.”

The dog’s owner, Parker Brumfield, previously made a Facebook post asking for the public’s help. He said it happened in front of the bar 440 Castro, where there is an outdoor parklet often frequented by dog owners and dog lovers.

“My frenchie, Hank, was last seen Wednesday night (12/10/25) in front of 440 Castro while on a night walk with one of his parents around 1140 PM at Castro St and Market St in San Francisco, CA,” Brumfield stated. “He is fawn with a black mask, 5 years old, 32 lbs, stocky/muscular build, neutered, chipped, and very friendly. [Pl]ease DM with any leads, and EVERYONE PLEASE SHARE this post and information, whether you are close or far. I want as many eyes and ears out about this from all over.”

Brumfield didn’t immediately return a request for comment for this report December 18. He gives a number of 415-355-4349 to contact.

French Bulldogs are one of the most dognapped breeds in the country, contributing to a 150% increase in stolen dogs between 2019 and 2024 according to AKC Reunite. The website Dogster notes purebred Frenchies can fetch $12,000 and are “the American Kennel Club’s most popular breed, which explains the high price tag for a stolen animal.”

Rueca is asking anyone who locates the dog to call 911, provide a location, and give a description of anyone with the dog. Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to contact SFPD at 415-575-4444 or text a tip to TIP411 and begin the message with SFPD.
