NYC Pride Presents 'Stonewall Uprising'

In honor of the Stonewall 45 Pride season and the 30th anniversary of Heritage of Pride, NYC Pride will host a screening and panel discussion of the groundbreaking PBS American Experience documentary film "Stonewall Uprising." The event will take place Friday, May 30, 2014 at 6 p.m., St. John's Lutheran Church, 81 Christopher Street .

The 2010 film, based on David Carter's classic book "Stonewall: The Riots That Sparked the Gay Rights Movement" depicts the struggle between the police, the gay bar patrons and the Mafia, The documentary highlights the rising tension and ultimate explosion at Stonewall which launched what we now consider the LGBT 21st Century Civil Rights movement which is sweeping the nation and affecting the entire world. It has come to define human rights in our time.

Following the screening a wide ranging panel discussion moderated by author Eric Marcus will include the producers of the film - Kate Davis and David Heilbroner, two Stonewall veterans, - Danny Garvin and Martin Boyce who appear in the film, and photographer Suzanne Poli who witnessed the Stonewall protests and photographed out the window of her Christopher Street apartment for years following the riots and has been photographing the march and parade and movement ever since.

NYC Pride is hoping that this event will drive home the critical connection between the Stonewall riots and the ongoing LGBT Civil Rights movement as celebrated in the annual parade and Pride events every June. Our goal is to educate, inspire and support the ongoing movement and to discuss the importance of what transpired on those dramatic days and nights of revolution. Our particular interest is to reach out and inspire youth.
