Absolutely Fabulous: Absolutely All Of It
Karin McKie READ TIME: 2 MIN.
Eddy and Pats, the "diamond-studded whores of the oligarchs," bring their booze and drugs, chain-smoking and questionable fashion senses to "Absolutely Fabulous: Absolutely All of It," where they try to recapture their glory days in the cult hit, adapted from a 1991 Jennifer Saunders and Dawn French skit by Saunders into a 5-season BBC (and later Logo co-produced) series.
Collected in a fabulous (of course) faux fuchsia iguana skin clutch bag case (with metallic animal-print lining and gold clasp), the limited edition set includes the adventures of frumpy fashionista PR rep Edina Monsoon (Saunders) and her enabling magazine mogul friend Eurydice Colette Clytemnestra Dido Bathsheba Rabelais Patricia Cocteau Stone, aka Patsy (back-combed blonde stick Joanna Lumley), in 1,244 minutes of content, every episode plus bonus features, all contained on 10 discs.
Each DVD, darlings, is labeled with a letter from "Absolutely." "A" contains the inaugural episode and the rest of season 1, which includes a trip to France and some outtakes (most discs contain gag reel material). The six episodes of season 2 are in "B," and include a visit to Morocco and more of their infamous "self-induced crises." "S" is season 3, and "O" is season 4 with a brilliant "Menopause" episode (lots of "dong quai" jokes).
"L" takes the pair to New York, where they meet Whoopi Goldberg, and "U" is episodes 1-6 of season 5, which feature model Twiggy. "T" (disc 7) is episodes 7 and 8 of season 5, with Emma "Baby Spice" Bunton.
Disc 8, "E," was shot 8 years after the regular series ended, and offers three 20th anniversary specials. "L" and "Y" feature new bonus material, including interviews with BBC comedy producer (and OBE) Jon Plowman, Lumley on modeling, AbFab's 2012 "Comic Relief" special as well as their work with "Sport Relief," Saunders and Lumley carrying the Olympic torch, other behind-the-scenes featurettes, and the "Mirrorball" series pilot featuring all the AbFab stars.
Other cameos include Mo Gaffney, Idris Elba, Elton John, as well as voice work from Bette Midler, Elizabeth Taylor, and Pet Shop Boy Neil Tennant, who produced a song for the terrible twosome. And AbFab's theme music "This Wheel's on Fire," written by Bob Dylan and Rick Danko, remains relevant, sweetie:
Wheels on fire,
Rolling down the road.
Best notify my next of kin,
This wheel shall explode.
