Thousands of Illinois residents are expected at the state Capitol to rally in support of same-sex marriage.

Organizers say several thousand people are expected to take part in Tuesday's "March on Springfield." The grassroots campaign will urge lawmakers to approve gay marriage.

The Senate approved the measure in February, but the measure stalled in the House leaving deep disappointment among activists. House Speaker Michael Madigan has said about a dozen votes are still needed.

The event will begin with a noon concert followed by a rally and march. Democratic U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin and Democratic Gov. Pat Quinn are participating in the event. The governor says he'll sign the legislation if it's approved.

At least 13 states and the District of Columbia allow gay marriage.
